THE CAUSES OF POOR WORKMANSHIP IN THE BUILDING OF RDP HOUSING IN SOUTH AFRICA

 

  • Skills shortage

  - Workers unskilled but given task to brick up a wall
  - Unqualified plumbers given work
  - Unregistered electricians
  - Unskilled painters

 

  • Lack of supervision on site

  - Subcontractors left to work on site alone without supervision from main contractor
  - Municipality and government inspectors fail to check properly before signing off the work

 

  • Poor remuneration process to labourers

  - Contractors pay very little to subcontractors
  - Subcontractors pay very little to their labourers

 

  • Theft of material

  - Labourers steal material as a results of less remuneration

 

  • Lack of accountability

   - Contractors run away when they have got their money
  - Subcontractors leave site before completing their work
